When water disasters strike we know it can be a very hectic time but there are a few things you can do to help mitigate the problems. While waiting for us to arrive prepare your site by going over our Frequently Asked Questions
Should I wait for my insurance company to look at the loss before getting help?
No… Your insurance company may take several days to look at the damages and they require you to take steps to lessen the damage before they arrive. In fact doing nothing to mitigate the damages may result in your claim being denied. With water damage the scope of the loss grows over time. Whether a claim is caused by water or fire the loss of use of the structure for a business can be much more costly than the damage to the building itself. The most important thing you can do to mitigate the loss is to obtain professional help.
What are some things that I should not do?
- Take too long to make a decision… Often people take too long contemplating what to do. Meanwhile the decision is being made for them as items that could have been saved with quick action are now beyond saving. Call, gather information, formulate a plan and put it into action.
- Turn heat up and turn on fans… Raising the temperature does increase the amount of moisture that the air can hold and turning on fans puts more of the water into the air however it does nothing to actually remove the water from the building. Also the increased temperature usually promotes mold growth. If you do only one thing after a water damage event run dehumidifiers.
- Move wood stained furniture from wet carpet to dry carpet… The stain from the furniture can be drawn out by the dry carpet and produce an irremovable stain on the carpet. The number one reason carpet needs to be replaced is not from being wetted by clean water it is due to staining from furniture or contents.
My insurance company wants me to use their “preferred” company. Should I use them?
Not recommended… Just remember that it is not unusual for that company to receive most of their work from the insurance companies directly therefore it is reasonable for you to assume that they will treat the insurance company as the customer and not you.
What should I do while waiting for help to arrive?
Stop the source of water if possible. Move valuables and furniture to an unaffected area or prop up furniture in place. Run a dehumidifier if you have one however do not run any fans as they will most likely overwhelm the dehumidifier and promote mold growth. Locate your insurance policy and take pictures to document damages.
What if I have no insurance coverage for my loss?
You may find yourself in the unenviable position of having a loss that is not covered by insurance. In this situation it is even more important to get professional assistance as soon as possible. Remember that the cost of your loss grows over time. Water continues to migrate throughout your structure via flow, wicking and high humidity. Materials that were not directly wetted start pulling moisture into themselves and mold growth can quickly get out of control. The sooner you have us start the less your damage will cost to mitigate and thus repair. On average, for every dollar you spend on our services, you save another three in reduced costs of repairs.

A frequent cause of basement flooding is the failure of the sump pump system. Failure is often caused by a defective pump, burned out motor, stuck or faulty float switch or a power outage. When the sump pump system doesn’t work correctly the ground underneath and surrounding your home becomes oversaturated. This will cause water to flow into your basement often through many places. This extra water will also fill any in floor HVAC ductwork with hundreds of gallons of water. An Insight Restoration professional trained technician will assess the damages and provide you with a plan of action. We use state of the art drying techniques along with thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing your property to ensure a seamless restoration process.
Sump Pump Tips:
- Check your sump pump to ensure it is working correctly.
- Occasionally clean the basket as dirt and construction debris will flow into it over time.
- Consider a backup battery pack for proper operation during power outages.
- Verify with your insurance company that you have proper coverage for sump pump failure resulting in a flooded basement. A common sump pump policy allows for $5,000 in coverage which many times is not enough for mitigation and repairs. 15-20k in coverage will not cost much more but will typically allow you to restore your basement to a pre-loss condition.
- Make sure you have a properly installed check valve by your pump.
- Have the pump discharge as far away from your house as reasonably possible.
